Penn became the first team to clinch an NCAA Tournament berth this season with its win over Columbia on Saturday. I was glad to be there, and we had a great time celebrating afterwards...

Trade Me!
So, after a nice afternoon nap, and I click onto ESPN.com to find that the Knicks have made a couple of deals at the NBA trade deadline.
Good, I think... maybe they're finally getting serious about rebuilding. Maybe they got rid of some big, stupid contracts. Maybe...
Wait a minute, Isiah Thomas is still in charge.

Retraction
Turns out there is Bugs Bunny on TV. The Boomerang Channel features Looney Tunes a few times a day, so it's now in my fake TiVo lineup. This morning I got to watch "Baseball Bugs," in which Bugs Bunny plays all nine positions against the Gas-House Gorillas. It's an absolute classic. Final score: Bugs Bunny 96, Gas-House Gorillas 95.
My apologies to anyone who read yesterday's entry and felt moved to write their Congressional representative to protest the lack of Bugs Bunny on our airwaves. It was not my intention to waste your time, your postage or the time of your elected officials.

Pictures 42: Yankee Stadium
Pitchers and catchers reported this week, the first sign that the long, dull winter is finally coming to a close. I went up to Yankee Stadium to cash in on a rain check from last season. Soon enough, the place will be hopping, but it'll still be a little wait until then...

Pictures 40: St. Paul's Church
St. Paul's Church in Mount Vernon has a long history that I won't repeat in its entirety, but which is really interesting -- it served as an active church for over 300 years, and the graveyard is still in use, the final resting place of Hessian soldiers and late 20th century parishioners alike.
There was a lot to see, so I took a lot of pictures.

This sign is in the Bronx, which was part of Westchester County when the church was set up. I believe that the whole thing was the Town of Eastchester, which helps explain why there's not much demarcation between today's Bronx and Mount Vernon.

Pictures 39: Eastchester/Mount Vernon
Tuesday was the most beautiful day we've had in the northeast in what felt like years after a mucky, often rainy winter. It was sunny with temperatures at near-springlike levels. I thought about conducting the Great Brooklyn Cow Search (more on this at a later date), but flipped through my map of New York City and found something just north of the Bronx that I wanted to investigate -- St. Paul's Church National Historic Site.
So, I trekked up to the end of the line on the 5 train at Dyre Avenue in the Eastchester section of the Bronx, checking off five more subway stops on my way to having toured the whole system. Then it was a quick walk out of the city to Mount Vernon. I'd never walked out of the city before, which made it a little more interesting for me -- the sudden change in fire hydrants and street signs was the only way to tell I was out of the Bronx.

East 233rd Street, Eastchester
This is just interesting because of the disclaimer at the bottom. The dollar menu is only available in the Bronx? Who is McDonald's trying to fool?

Greenpoint Avenue
I don't know what Leviton is, don't know what goes on in this building, don't really care. I just thought it looked cool. I also liked the fact that as I walked by it, I crossed Jewel Street (not so exciting) and Newel Street (what is a newel?), which made me laugh out loud. Fortunately, there was nobody around to see me in the role of crazy person laughing to himself on the street.

Pictures 37: Walk to Greenpoint
About two weeks ago, the weather was beautiful, so I took a long walk. By the time it was over, I had gone about five miles, from Astoria to Williamsburg. I also took some pictures along the way, feeling rather like a stranger in a strange land. It's often like that when you walk through an industrial area, especially for the first time. This was my first time crossing over Newtown Creek, which divides Queens and Brooklyn at their westernmost points, on foot.

Safe!

3rd Avenue, Manhattan
"As many as 37 or more." So, there could be 33? Or 40? Or 5? Or 698? Who knows?! Why be so specific, anyway? This is the kind of thing that drives me absolutely bats, especially when an identical sign at a building a couple of blocks down advises visitors that they may be taped by "as many as 28 or more" cameras.
And you "may" be taped? There's a possibility that you won't be taped at all. Basically, what they're telling you is that they have some cameras, and you could be taped by 28 or 37 or maybe even more than that or possibly zero and what does it matter anyway if the guy watching the monitors has stepped out for a cup of coffee.
A better sign would be "Welcome to New York City. Odds are you're on camera."

Yankees On Paper: Part 2
Time to step back about 60 feet, 6 inches and finish looking at the 2000 Yankees and 2005 Yankees on the pitching mound to finally see which team looks better, at least on paper.

Yankees On Paper: Part 1
With pitchers and catchers now just two days away from reporting to spring training (finally!), I thought I’d take some time to examine whether, at least on paper, the Yankees are better now than when they won their last World Series in 2000, taking a look position by position. I’ll use the Yankees who played in that Series (plus Randy Choate and Jason Grimsley to get the roster to 25 since I can’t remember exactly who the two guys were that didn’t play), and my best guess at the 2005 lineup.
Of course, the 2000 Yankees went 87-74, just 13 games over .500 – their fewest games over the break-even mark since going 76-86 in 1992. While I’m not totally looking at the team that struggled through much of the regular season, a Yankee fan would have to hope that this season’s team is better.
At least mentally, this exercise should bring me back to the good old days…

Mad (Pictures Thirty)-4 Mex
Yesterday was a sort of annual pilgrimage for me, a trip to the Palestra for the Penn-Princeton basketball game. It's hard to believe that I've now seen the Quakers and Tigers face each other for seven straight years at college basketball's most historic gym.
I met Haggs and Rod at 30th Street Station in the afternoon and we made another holy visit to the three-way intersection of 9th, Wharton and Passyunk in South Philly for chessesteaks. Then it was on to Mad 4 Mex, where most of the group got together for chips, salsa, wings and the always popular $6 "Big Azz" margaritas during happy hour.

Mix It Up
When I was in fifth grade, I had a very vivid dream that I still remember, even though I only had it once.
I was on the Giants, in a key game against the Cowboys. I was the quarterback and threw for the winning touchdown as time expired. The next thing I knew, I was kissing the girl that I had a crush on at the time.
Yes, that was the moment I knew.

Another post with a number, but one I haven't done in a while... the vacuum cleaner for my brain -- Random Thoughts!
Speaking of vacuum cleaners, I received one as a Chanukah present in December. I still haven't opened the box. I don't live in squalor or anything, but I can't motivate myself to vacuum. It'll happen eventually, I guess, but not today, probably not tomorrow and I already know that I'm planning to do something else the next day.
