07/11/2005: "Project Baseball: Part 21"
We've reached the All-Star break, and Project Baseball reaches 21 games in the books. Nineteen teams down, 11 to go.
In other sports news, it's good to see that not everyone in hockey is as dumb as Jeremy Roenick. I don't care about the sniping anymore. Just bring back hockey and bring back the Whale.
July 10
Indians at Yankees
Seats: Tier Reserved, Section 7 (right of home plate)
Who I Went With: Caroline
Hot Dogs: 1
Beers: 0
Game Highlight: The Indians had runners on first and second with nobody out and a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. I'm not sure I'd say that Randy Johnson was on the ropes, but Cleveland definitely had a chance to break the game open. Instead, Jose Hernandez got caught stealing as Jhonny Peralta struck out, and Ronnie Belliard got caught stealing second to end the inning with Aaron Boone at the plate. I turned to Caroline and said that it would surely be a turning point in the game. It was. Jason Giambi gave the Yankees the lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, and even though Cleveland came back to tie, there was no doubt from that point on that the Yankees were going to win -- which they did, 9-4.
It Was Over When: The Indians drew within 6-4 by stringing together two hits and a walk against Wayne Franklin, but Tanyon Sturtze came in with two runners on and one out in the seventh and shut the door.
Go To The Ballpark & See Something You've Never Seen Before: There's effectively wild, and then there's effectively bad, which is something I had never really witnessed before today. The Indians got the leadoff man on base in five of the six innings Johnson pitched, and could never get more than one run across. Also, Grady Sizemore was a homer away from the cycle, but struck out looking in the ninth. I've never seen a cycle, and I'm pretty sure I've also never seen anyone strike out looking with a shot at the cycle. Although perhaps that's because I've never seen Jorge Posada have a shot for the cycle.
