05/26/2005: "Project Baseball: Part 14"

I can't believe that it's late May and it was as cold as it was last night at Yankee Stadium last night. At least the rain held off and it turned out to be one of the best-played games I've seen all season, a solid pitching matchup between Chien-Ming Wang and Mike Maroth. From the way they both pitched, it's hard to tell that Wang is a rookie and Maroth is two years removed from being a 21-game loser.

Game Highlight: Well, it made the back page of the Daily News and Newsday, and it was undoubtedly the play of the game -- Derek Jeter's catch of Marcus Thames' flare into short center field. At the time, it looked like Jeter and Robinson Cano were occupying the same space. Best play I've seen this season.
It Was Over When: Well, Jeter made that catch to end the seventh inning. Tom Gordon pitched the eighth, Mariano Rivera handled the ninth, and it was time to go home.
Go To The Ballpark & See Something You've Never Seen Before: The catch. I've seen two players dive for a ball at the same time, but never diving in the same direction to the point where one lands on top of the other.
