02/17/2005: "Pictures 39: Eastchester/Mount Vernon"
Tuesday was the most beautiful day we've had in the northeast in what felt like years after a mucky, often rainy winter. It was sunny with temperatures at near-springlike levels. I thought about conducting the Great Brooklyn Cow Search (more on this at a later date), but flipped through my map of New York City and found something just north of the Bronx that I wanted to investigate -- St. Paul's Church National Historic Site.
So, I trekked up to the end of the line on the 5 train at Dyre Avenue in the Eastchester section of the Bronx, checking off five more subway stops on my way to having toured the whole system. Then it was a quick walk out of the city to Mount Vernon. I'd never walked out of the city before, which made it a little more interesting for me -- the sudden change in fire hydrants and street signs was the only way to tell I was out of the Bronx.

This is just interesting because of the disclaimer at the bottom. The dollar menu is only available in the Bronx? Who is McDonald's trying to fool?

I wish I had a better way to take that picture -- the tiny sign in the top left says "Exotic Dancing." It looked a lot weirder in person than in the picture, but I still thought the picture was pretty interesting.

There's no discernible border between the Bronx and Mount Vernon here, no sign that says "Welcome to Mount Vernon" or an intersection at which Westchester County lays on the other side of the street. This faded "No Parking" sign was the closest I could figure to be a border. The name of the road changes, but there are no buildings for a few feet either way.

The arrow is pointing right at the Salvation Army building. Maybe there's something I don't know.
