12/28/2004: "Sign of the Times"

Sign at 34th Street/Herald Square Station, 2004
I'm pretty sure that there hasn't been an "S" train that stopped at Herald Square since at least 1997. Not that there's any reason this sign should be on the MTA's to-do list, but it's one of those things that you see and just make you scratch your head for a second. At least, if you're me, it is.

The orange S was the 6 Av Shuttle and it ran from June 22, 2001 (I think) until December 2001. When the V came into existence, the 6 Av Shuttle went kaput.
The 6 Av "S" was a pretty useless train.

OK, so I guess the sign is only three years out of date. I didn't remember a short-lived 2001 shuttle. Thanks.

The orange (S) first ran from May '87 to December '88. Then the orange (Q) came until 2001. Then the orange (S) came back until the (V) took over.

Just to be clear, the reason I said 1997 is that in my collection of maps, I saw a late-night S train that ran from Queensbridge to, I believe, Broadway-Lafayette (I'm not looking at it now). I guess I just don't have a map from that part of 2001.
Looking around that part of the Herald Square Station, though, there are six or seven "B-D-F-V" signs. They just missed this one.
