12/20/2004: "Pictures 20: Protest"
Saturday afternoon, there was a protest of the MTA's proposed ban on photography. Feeling that the ban is stupid, I went and snapped some pictures.
After meeting up in Grand Central Station, the protest filled one of the vintage subway cars on the 42nd Street Shuttle.
The MTA wants to crack down on this kind of "underground video" more than it wants to bust the guy selling DVDs of "Ocean's Twelve" a few steps away.
Probably the coolest shot I got during the protest... somebody racing to catch a train.
Bingo. As if terrorists really need pictures of the subway to figure out how they'd carry out an attack (God forbid)? As if those pictures aren't already plentiful and available? Yup, let's start a program that cracks down on tourists, artists and schmucks like me who like to take pictures. Great idea!
The protest paused at the Union Square police substation under 14th Street before heading to Brooklyn.
This police officer didn't shoo the crowd away... he just wanted to find out why everyone was standing outside the substation and taking pictures. Pretty cool.
