12/06/2004: "Pictures 14: Astoria"
I figured I'd put up a few more pictures before I turn in for the night.
I've just got some assorted shots from around Astoria, so that'll satisfy my urge to put something up.
Actually, before the pictures, a word on the Giants. I should have known better. I trashed them throughout the summer, throughout the preseason, after the season opener. Then they won some games and I drank the Kool-Aid. Bad idea.
This game in Washington was an abomination. I can't blame Eli Manning. From the start of the game to the time I left for work, when it was 14-0, they had run a grand total of zero productive passing plays. This is entirely on the coaching staff, which doesn't have injuries as an excuse on the offensive side of the ball. The Redskins would line up nine-man fronts, and the Giants would respond by slamming Tiki Barber into the line for maybe a gain of a yard. That would put Manning in an obvious passing situation, and he'd have no open receivers downfield. If he could avoid a sack, he'd be able to hit a safety valve receiver, but that was it. This is why Jim Finn was their most productive receiver early in the game.
Anyway, they stink. Part of it has to do with the injuries, but I think it mostly has to do with the total predictability of the play-calling on both sides of the ball. Tom Coughlin switched to Eli Manning at quarterback because he wanted to create a "spark." The only way this team is getting a spark is if Coughlin leaves and somebody with even the slightest filament of imagination comes in.
I promised pictures, though, so here they are... Astoria, Queens, USA!
Finally, a musical gift up my alley: an air guitar!
Why don't athletes picket anymore? I seem to remember the NFL players walking a line in 1987. Either way, there's a lot of time to kill while taking the fight to the man.
An old sign points the way to LaGuardia from 22nd Street and Astoria Boulevard.
I don't know if it's still an official Democratic office, but the old facade is cool, and there is a Peter Vallone campaign sign in one of the windows.
The end, for now. Not the greatest view of Manhattan, but it seems that the Astoria waterfront should have more to it than it does.
